Police claim that when they approached the vehicle, they could smell alcohol from the inside. Officers then requested Trinity, the driver, to exit the SUV so that they could speak with her. Officers then claimed that Jonathan Fatu, Trinity's spouse, exited the vehicle while officers were speaking to Trinity and removed his shirt, then proceeded to walk towards the officers, prompting one of the officers to pull out his taser. The situation was quickly calmed down, however, and Fatu was placed under arrest and charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction of justice. [97] In March 2019, it was revealed that Fatu's attorney struck a plea deal with prosecutors, and as per the condition of the agreement, Fatu pleaded no contest to interfering with a government employee and he was ordered to pay a $450 fine. Just prior to the onset of America’s involvement in World War II in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt sought to unite several service associations into one organization to lift the morale of our military and nourish support on the home front. Those entities – the Salvation Army, Young Men’s Christian Association, Young Women’s Christian Association, National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association and the National Jewish Welfare Board - became the United Service Organizations.

The USO has continued to support our nation’s military and their families for over seven decades, as they defend our country and its freedoms. By providing support to our servicemen and women as they perform their most challenging duties around the world, our credo is to be always by their side. The reach of the USO’s more than 200 centers extends to countries on every continent, operated by thousands of staff and volunteers whose goals are to match our service members’ vigilance and provide best-in-class service to those who sacrifice so much for America.

History of USO Wisconsin

Over the years, the USO has become the vital bridge between Americans and their military service members.

1941: USO volunteer groups worked with other community groups to support military overseas and locally, by hosting dances, rallies, and other events of support.

1944-1984: USO volunteer groups grew in times of war, providing support where needed. The USO center in Milwaukee provided a relaxing environment for military visiting Milwaukee. The military personnel at Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois were assisted by USO volunteers in finding entertainment when visiting Wisconsin.

1984: USO of Wisconsin was incorporated as a charter center of the USO worldwide organization.

October 2011: USO Wisconsin opened a USO lounge at General Mitchell International Airport, providing a relaxing oasis for military members and their families.

November 2011: A new USO center opened at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in Milwaukee for recruits and their families.

2015: USO Wisconsin opened its first two centers on the Forward Operating Bases at Fort McCoy, near Tomah, WI. USO continues to expand support during various training exercises on the training grounds.

2016: USO Wisconsin opened a new center at the La Crosse Regional Airport. USO also launched a new USO mobile center by repurposing a used bread truck. The mobile center supports Fort McCoy and the remote training base areas nearby, along with the chartered flight area of the La Crosse Airport.

2017: USO Wisconsin opened a third center on the Fort McCoy base.

2018: The original USO Mobile Center truck was replaced with a brand new vehicle and continues to support the areas in western Wisconsin.

USO History

In early 1941, the United States was on the verge of war. With tensions mounting, and the military growing, there was no single service agency focused on supporting the troops.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt was concerned about the welfare and spirits of those headed for battle, and he appealed to the country to provide morale and recreational services to the troops. In response, six service agencies – YMCA, YWCA, Salvation Army, Jewish Welfare Board, Catholic Community Charities, and Travelers Aid Society – worked in partnership to create and support the launch of the United Service Organizations Inc. (USO).

This partnership, and the financial support from American citizens, was essential to the USO’s founding. It also set a precedent for partnerships and volunteerism, both of which have played a significant role in the history of the USO and both remain critical to the success of the present and future USO.

For the first seven years of its existence, the USO opened 3,000 centers across the country, and became known as a home away from home. Hollywood was also enthusiastic to demonstrate their patriotism, and through the USO, they provided live entertainment to the troops called Camp Shows. Between 1941 and 1947, the USO hosted over 400,000 Camp Shows with 7,000 volunteer entertainers that included Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, Fred Astaire, James Cagney, Jack Benny, and many more. The most notable celebrity to entertain the troops, Bob Hope, created a legacy unequaled.

Bob Hope devoted 48 Christmases overseas with American troops, and his connection to the USO resulted with him being one of the most beloved entertainers of all time. His contribution to the USO started in 1941 and ended in 1991 during Operation Desert Shield. In 1996, the U.S. Congress honored Bob Hope and declared him the first and only honorary veteran of the U.S. armed forces.

At the end of World War II, the USO disbanded, in part due to lack of funding. However, in 1950, when the United States entered the Korean War, Secretary of Defense George Marshall and the Secretary of the Navy Francis P. Matthews requested that the USO be restored “to provide support for the men and women of the armed forces with help of the American people”. War historian Paul Edwards noted that between 1952 and 1953, the USO provided services in Korea every day of the year –in 1952, the USO was serving 3.5 million troops using much the same methods of operation as they did during World War II. By the end of the Korean War in 1953, over 113,000 USO volunteers were working at 294 centers in the United States and abroad.

During the Vietnam War, 23 USO clubs opened in Vietnam and Thailand and served as many as one million troops each month with a home away from home support. The USO also operated centers at major United States airports that provided a variety of services and a place to sleep between flights. Most of the same services are offered today – snacks, gift shops, telephone calls, and hot showers – whatever is needed by our active personnel and their families.

When the draft ended in the 1970s, the need for the USO was questioned. The United Way of America and the Department of Defense visited military bases around the world to observe USO programs and services. Their findings were unanimous: “If there were no USO, another organization would have to be created….Isolation of the military from civilian influences is not, we believe at this time, in the interest of our nation.” The USO launched into a new era of service, which included new programs and services to assist the military with effective transition into civilian life. Outreach programs were created worldwide, and additional USO centers were established at airports to assist with military travelers.

1980’s to today…

In 1987, the USO signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Defense that states the USO is “the principal channel representing civilian concern for the United States armed forces worldwide.” USOs around the world have provided morale and support to active-duty military represented the United States in the Gulf War – Operation Desert Shield, and in Afghanistan and Iraq – Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

Currently, the USO has over 160 centers around the world that make active-duty military’s lives easier. There are over 30 airport centers, and the variety of needs met is far-reaching, from assistance with layovers, connections, and missing luggage, to language translation and dignified transports.

The USO has continued to support our nation’s military and their families for over seven decades. Today’s service members need the care, comfort, connection and support that can only be provided by an organization that is with them at every point of their military journey, no matter where or under what conditions they serve. The USO is continuously adapting to the needs of our men and women in uniform and their families so they can focus on their important mission.

The USO remains dedicated to expanding access to USO centers and programs around the world, increasing annual service connections and boosting transition services for our service members and their families throughout their time of duty. With more than 230 physical USO locations around the world, the USO has both the reach and the capability to provide crucial programs and services to the entire military community. In every corner of the world, our service members will know that the USO is always by their side.

The United Service Organizations of North Carolina (USO of NC), founded in 1941, is the lead organization charged with supporting military servicemen and women in the state of North Carolina. Eleven percent of U.S. military active duty forces call North Carolina home. With seven major military installations, North Carolina has the fourth largest demographic of active and reserve duty components in the country.

USO of NC is an independent 501C-3 organization chartered by USO Arlington as a self-sustaining separate operating entity. USO of NC is wholly reliant on funding from private grants, donations, corporate gifts and sponsorships, and fundraisers. It receives no direct funding from the national USO or from the government.

With six centers statewide, USO of NC serves an average of 567,000 troops over the course of a year. Four travel-based centers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Raleigh Durham International Airport along with the Fayetteville Airport and Ellis Airport in Jacksonville host an average of 18,000 visitors per month. Two installation-based centers at Fort Bragg and Jacksonville (the oldest operating USO in the world) and the Charlotte MEPS center serve an average of 109,000 troops and their families annually, in addition to providing assistance with Rack Packs, Care Packages, deployments and homecomings. The USO of NC Mobile Unit travels statewide to support troops and their families in remote locations and at deployments and homecomings, with the secondary mission of disaster relief.

Beyond the traditional interest of providing troops with all the comforts of home, USO of NC has stayed relevant in the 21st century by offering support services and critical programs to military families.

USO of NC, its sponsors and 700 volunteers are passionately invested in helping to alleviate some of these challenges. This past year, USO of NC supported hundreds of troops with meal needs by hosting local holiday meals and distributing grocery store food cards and food pantry items. USO of NC actively helps keep troops and their families connected by providing an online video messaging tool funded by private donors and sponsors called the Smiles over Miles program. USO of NC has a statewide education initiative in the works designed to teach reading skills to elementary school military children who have fallen behind academically.

The USO has kept our military men and women connected to family, home and country throughout their time of service – no matter where, how long, or under what conditions they serve. It was founded in preparation for World War II by national leaders who understood that maintaining high morale in a fighting force is vital to a nation’s military success. Over time, the USO has become the vital bridge between Americans and their military service members. The USO is a family of volunteers, sustained by the charitable contributions of millions of generous Americans. We are united in our commitment to support America’s service members by keeping them connected to the people, places and things they love. We do this through countless acts of caring, comfort, connection and support. Our work is America’s most powerful expression of gratitude to the men and women who secure our nation’s freedoms.

The USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia (USOHRCV) is the premier service organization of the United States military and their families in the region serving the largest concentration of military personnel in the country. We are a non-governmental, non-profit 501c (3) organization that receives no direct government funding but relies solely on the generosity of the American People.

“100% of Americans enjoy freedom, but only 1% are willing to defend it. Ons het hulle nodig. They need us. We need you. It’s your community and your USO, and we matter to those who need us most.”

The USO was formed in response to a request from President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941, who determined it would be best if private organizations handled the on-leave recreation of the rapidly growing U.S. armed forces. Roosevelt’s call to action led six civilian agencies to coordinate their civilian war efforts and resources to form a new organization—the USO (United Service Organizations). The six civilian agencies were the Salvation Army, Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association and the National Jewish Welfare Board. Today, as always the USO is a private, nonprofit organization, supported entirely by private citizens and corporations.

Throughout World War II until today, during every conflict, the USO is the channel for community participation during every war effort and peacetime. In hundreds of communities, local USO Centers are a “Home Away from Home,” supporting them via a variety of morale and quality of life programs. In 1979, President Carter disbanded the original six membership of the original USO organization, by request, on December 20, 1979. Greater Jacksonville Area USO was immediately established as an Independent Chartered Affiliate USO Organization on December 21, 1979. For almost 34 years, Jacksonville Florida’s three local USO Centers in Duval County (Mayport USO Center, Naval Air Station Jacksonville USO Center, and the Jacksonville International Airport USO Welcome Center) have served our 250,000-plus active duty military population by offering the many programs of support to improve their quality of life and create that “Home Away from Home” environment in each of our Centers hosting thousands of visitors each year.
